YAKIMA — A Wapato woman was sentenced to 22 months in prison for stealing from the St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Wapato, where she was the bookkeeper.

Claudia Deleon Gomez, 36, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of first-degree theft and forgery in Yakima County Superior Court. She was sentenced Thursday.

Church officials reported the missing money to Wapato police in May 2007.

Church officials reported that she owes nearly $39,000, although the cash amount taken during her tenure was just more than $33,000.

The court file indicates that the defense and prosecution agreed to restitution of about $20,000, with the prospect of a future hearing on the final amount.

Deleon Gomez took the money through a mix of vacation and sick leave, police said.

Church officials recovered $30,000 through an insurance claim.
