Warning to local, foreign priests: stay away from kidnap-prone areas

| November 3, 2009

MANILA, Philippines – The Church hierarchy in Cotabato advised foreign and local missionaries to stay away from areas where they could fall prey to kidnapping.

Cotabato Auxiliary Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo said they have requested all priests in the province to avoid such dangerous areas.

He said they have instituted some policies to prevent any further kidnapping incidents, the latest of which involved Irish missionary Fr. Michael Sinnott. The foreign priest was forcibly taken by a group of armed men in Pagadian City last Oct. 11.

Church officials appealed Sinnott's abductors to safely release the 79-year-old priest, who had reportedly undergone four heart bypass operations in 2007.
