Warrant issued for Hastings man who discharged gun near church to ‘protect’ the children

| September 20, 2011

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office has issued an arrest warrant for a Hastings man, Dennis Michael Dick, 45, who did not appear for a mandated court appearance earlier this month. He was scheduled to appear in Dakota County District Court after he allegedly fired shots near the Rivertown Church last summer.

The incident was reported June 21, 2010, and this past May, Dick was charged with one felony count of reckless discharge of a firearm in a municipality. Dakota County deputies were called last June to the area of Rivertown Church on Red Wing Boulevard, about four miles south of Hastings, on the report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the lot. When a deputy arrived in the area, he observed the vehicle parked in the lot and ran a vehicle check. As he was completing the check, the deputy heard four gunshots coming from south of the location. They sounded like they were very close to the area.

The deputy walked up to the driver of the vehicle and the driver said, “I think someone’s shooting at us.” As the deputy talked to the driver, he heard two more gunshots and told the driver to leave immediately.

The deputy contacted dispatch to report hearing multiple shots coming from close to his location and that he believed they were coming from a close location on Red Wing Boulevard. The deputy went to a nearby house and could see a male backing a truck into a garage. The deputy got out of car and yelled for the male to walk toward his voice.
