Woman answers to church money theft charges

| August 6, 2010

Marcie King stood before the judge today in Fayette Circuit Court. She is accused of stealing more than $100,000 from Southern Hills Methodist Church.

Now, she faces 8 counts of theft by unlawful taking.

39-year-old Marcie King used to be the childcare director at the church.

Police say over a three-year span, she took $115,000 that had been intended for childcare tuition.

Investigators say she spent the money on everything from weight-loss surgery to vacations and even wrote herself personal checks.

Her attorney says the investigation is just beginning, however, and a lot is still up in the air.

Church officials handed over all their information to the county attorney after firing King. Prosecutors and King's defense attorney plan to meet before the next court hearing.

King has been out of jail on bond since she was arrested. Today, the judge agreed for her to remain out of custody on that current bond.

King will appear in court next month for a preliminary hearing.
