Woman charged for church embezzlement

| April 7, 2012

A 27-year-old former church bookkeeper has been arrested for allegedly stealing nearly a quarter-of-a-million dollars from her workplace.

Elizabeth Brown, of 109 Shiloh Lane in Georgetown, was arrested Sunday, five months after an investigation was launched into missing money from Herbert United Methodist Church in Kensington.

According to the arrest warrant, Brown is accused of taking $240,340.18 between July 21, 2005 and November 2011.

The amount taken was determined through a forensic audit.

Brown, the warrant states, was “responsible for handling the church’s everyday finances.”

Last November, deputies were called to the Forest Ave. church where they met with David Essex, the staff chairman, and Raymond Pearigen, chairman of finances.
