Woman charged in historic church fire

| March 10, 2012

An 18-year-old female is facing charges in connection with a fire that destroyed a century-old church on the Kingsclear First Nation.

The young woman is scheduled to appear in Fredericton youth court on April 5 at 9:30 a.m. to enter pleas to charges of arson and breach of probation, RCMP Sgt. Don Stenger stated in a news release.

She is appearing in youth court because she was 17 years old at the time of the offence on Dec. 11, he said.

Charges may also be laid against a 17-year-old male, said Stenger. The Crown prosecutor's office is currently reviewing the file, he said.

St. Ann's Parish was the only church in the community, located just outside Fredericton. The Catholic church was 138 years old.
