VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The former Financial Administrator of a Virginia Beach church will serve four years in prison for embezzling nearly $300,000 from church coffers.

Michele Moeser Roberts, 62, was sentenced Wednesday in Virginia Beach Circuit Court to a total of 20 years, but the judge suspended sixteen.

Prosecutors said the Virginia Sentencing Guidelines in a felony embezzlement case recommended Roberts receive probation with no incarceration. "As Commonwealth’s Attorney and as a member of the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission, I agree with Judge (Les L.) Lilley’s decision to incarcerate Roberts for her criminal actions," Bryant said. The Court termed the amount of money taken as "staggering."
