Worshipper robbed while praying in Benton Harbor church

BENTON HARBOR — An afternoon of prayer turned into a robbery Friday.

Police say a man was robbed a little after 2 Friday afternoon while praying inside St. John and Bernard Parish, which is off Columbus and Catalpa streets in Benton Harbor.

Detectives said they have seen it all — mostly break-ins and robberies in the middle of the night. But when it comes to a church robbery, they said this is a new low.

This crime of opportunity took place in broad daylight. Detectives said they are just as shocked as many of you.

"You never think it’s going to happen at a church, and it did," said Detective Wes Smigielski from the Benton Harbor Police Department.

It's a difficult thought to process.

"You would think they’re safe in church. And like I said, it’s a shock to everybody," Smigielski said.

“It’s a nice area, we have a nice block," said Bruce and Crystal Bigford, who live in the same neighborhood as the church.
